Final tally: 50,153 words, and a reasonably satisfactory ending when all was said and done.
Lousy weather tonight seems to have led to lousy stolenborrowed internet connection as well, so this will be brief. Up to 48,700 words and at my current pace that puts me past the finish line tomorrow. A little creative twisting of the plot has me suddenly going back in a direction I'd envisioned years ago when I first dreamed up the plot that this story evolved from, and I think I know where I want things to end up now, which is good considering how close it is to the end, or what should be the end.

Other random trivia: 273.905 characters typed (including spaces), which gives me an average word-length of 4.58 characters. I have no idea how that compares to anything, but there it is.
Tonight's the first night in the new apartment, and thankfully someone in the neighborhood has an unsecured wireless hub so I have network access, although just barely. Today was mostly spent moving the last few major items and unpacking lots of stuff, but I did manage to get about another thousand words in, which brings the tally up to just over 47,500. That's less than 5% left!
1,100 words of exciting action today. Apparently I didn't pace this thing very well since at 46,600 words I should, in theory, be winding the story down and bringing everything to its proper conclusion, instead of ramping things up. I promise at least to not just keep counting words and then make the last ten be "Suddenly she died unexpectedly of a heart attack. The end."
Past the 90% mark today with another thousand words between moving yet more stuff... tally is up to 45,550.
A thousand words today between trips moving stuff from the old abode to the new abode. Down to 5,500 words to go, which feels so close and yet still so far away at my current pace... but there are still six days to go.
Well, it wasn't a buy-one get-two deal on words today but I did do another 1,000-or-so words, bringing the tally to 43,500 (or in other words, 6,500 to go.) I've all-but written off this story (no pun intended) in the quality or excitement department, so now it's more about getting it done and learning what not to do next time.
An actual action sequence today, which helped move the story along for a bit, although it petered after about 1,800 words. However, the tally is now up to 42,400... or as I can now comfortably say, "only 7,600 words to go!"
Pitiful day of writing today, but not due to writer's block or anything... instead I was bogged down with a bunch of other more pretting matters. First I got sidetracked trying to import all of my UW email address book into GMail, which took about ten times longer than I anticipated. Then finally this evening I signed a lease and got keys to a new abode, so I was there for a while taking measurements and plotting just what is going to be able to move with me. More on all of that in a later entry, no doubt.

Anyway, somewhere between all of that I did manage to get a little over 500 words in (bleh), but that brings the tally to 40,600.
Well, I hate my characters a little less today. It was a 2,000 word day which puts me past the big 4-0. Strangely, it feels so much more done now that I'm in the forty-thousands rather than the high thirties. My next big hope is that the 'avalanche down to the end' (as Neil Gaiman's pep-talk email called it) arrives shortly. If nothing else, I guess I need to start thinking about how I want to end the story, aside from the words 'The End'...
Only about 950 words tonight. It was a real struggle to even get 300 onto the page, so finally I jumped ahead to another conversation and that moved things along briefly, although I may need to introduce some random new characters so the protagonist can talk about things with someone who isn't entirely familiar with all of them already.
Up to 37,050 words. Tough day today... guess when I stopped writing yesterday it was due to more of a wall than I thought.
An interesting bout of writing today. At first I was seriously struggling to advance the story, getting only about 600 words down before I hit a wall. After pontificating on this for a while I finally just ended the chapter at that point, figuring that if I was fighting to write something interesting that maybe there simply wasn't anything interesting to write for that part, and moved on. Suddenly things were flowing quite well and I ended up getting about 2,300 words out, bringing the tally to 35,700.
I reached the two-thirds done point today, hitting 33,350 words done. Coincidentally (or not?), the plot shifts into a final phase starting roughly at this point as well, so perhaps this novel will be close to its actual end by the time it hits 50K. Guess we'll find out in about a week, if the current pace holds...
Just barely hit quota today with about 1,680 words written, bringing the tally to 31,730. It's been taking me longer and longer to write the story for each day of the plot, but today's work drew another day to a close.

Today was also an important NaNo day in that it was the start of week #3, and also the last day of the first half of the endeavor, so if you haven't hit 25K yet you're behind!
About a thousand words today which just barely puts me past 30K... 60% of the way done!

However today was the first day that I really was hating the characters and wishing they'd be less boring. I suppose everyone comes to hate their work at some point, and most come to hate it permanently (see most of my old music lyrics for reference -- or rather don't see them since they're never going to see the light of day again.)

Not that I'm expecting this to be a Newbury winner or something, so just reaching the 50K goal will be good enough for this go-around.
Another bit of writer's block and another decision to skip the plot forward by nearly a week since it was really bogging down again. Turned out to be a productive decision as I'm now up to 28,950 words. Now the story is getting very close to where I'd originally envisioned the loose bits of plot going, so in a few days it'll be real uncharted territory.
Up to 27,650 words, and right now they're fighting me tooth-and-nail. Not a lot new to report on the story... no earthquakes although I did finally write myself out of the dragged-out conversation and into the next day of action, or inaction as it's been sometimes...
Today was the first big milestone - I reached 25,000 words. (Final tally for the day is 25,050). Based on Zeno of Elea's paradoxes of motion, my next goal is to reach the halfway point of the second half, and so forth. Of course, based on that the quest is never-ending, but I do draw ever closer to the goal regardless.

The past few days of writing have been very slow, still focusing on a single day and single encounter. I'm struggling to find a way to get through the entire thing and progress quickly, but it's taking a long time to set things up and provide sufficient detail that it doesn't feel forced. Maybe we'll just throw in an earthquake tomorrow and shake things up, so to speak.

Update: Oops! Seems the default setting for the new editor in MT4 is WYSIWYG so that link didn't work properly. Now it should!
I got through 2100 more words today, but curiously it felt like I didn't get much done at all. I was actually quite surprised to see my word count is up to 23,200 words because the writing I'd done today felt fairly short and lousy. I guess this is what they mean about slogging through the middle parts.

But hey look! Shiny new web hosting (and the few galleries that were at the old space are back up here now, and at some point I'll get around to adding more like I intended...)
